2016 Mantra, Wed 24th February session + BRS Mini On Tour 2016

2016 - What will it hold?

With 2016 well underway, it was time to reflect on 2015 and talk about what's up with BRS in 2016!
BRS on Tour being in January this year has put us  little behind releasing our 2016 approach, so here we go!

As you know, each year at BRS we have a new mantra, something to give us variety, keep our members engaged, and to ensure we keep having fun! Last year was Inspiration [inspire me to live, laugh and run!]. We had our 6 inspirational bloggers and 6 inspirational facebookers who all had a free RechargeHQ Massages, we achieved our goal of Electronic sign in helping us to better understand our members and save the environment, and we continued as planned to integrate the latest running research into our sessions. There was one thing we didn't do that we promised....revamping the website :-(  So I apologise, 5 years on, its starting to look a little worn! I won't make this promise this year, but if I get to it, wow it will be a huge bonus. I am not one to go live with something I am truly not ecstatic with!

2015 also saw us introduce a variety of expertise and style into our coaching team, Matt & Liss have more regularly been coaching, and Matt L has been enjoying the spotlight of coaching and mentoring every week. I have really really missed seeing you regularly and meeting our new members, hopefully 2016 will see me more regularly at sessions.

There was a lot of thought about 2016 and how far we have come as a club, but what more can we offer? The biggest thing we love about BRS is the sense of Community....and we want to continue to nurture and grow that aspect of our squad.....

so for 2016, our mantra is
Community
build it, nurture it, and make it count!
If you look at any definition of community, its something like a group of people who are connected by relationships and common goals and values. Everybody in a community believes in its importance for themselves, and others!

What makes a community exist? They don't just sprout up for no reason!

We know this to be true, so this year our efforts will be on nurturing our existing running community, expanding the community to help more and more people enjoy the life benefits of running (and BRS!), and make sure every interaction with BRS counts!!

In line with this, our major projects or initiatives this year are:

1. Regular Newbie nights/Bring a friend nights: coming along to your first session with any new sporting team is very daunting, we want to make that process easier by having nights dedicated to newbies and people from  your existing networks coming along!  Through this we hope to inspire more people to be regularly active and make new friends.

2. Drawing on the wider running community: each month we will have a celebrity athlete session. The BRS session will be designed around a favourite session of one of our Australian Athletes. Learning from others in the running community is a great way to freshen things up!

3. Supporting Smaller Community events: There are soooooo many new events on the calendar this year and of course heaps we have never tried before. This year we will focus on some smaller events as well as a few of our major races.  Our Mini BRS on Tour 2016 is to Warwick for their annual Pentath-run, mini in duration, not mini in distance or effort!! We will continue to support Parkrun as a community event and its time we gave back with some volunteering sessions too!

4. Making it Count!: with people's lives become a little crazier by the day, we endeavor to ensure you continue to get the most out of your interactions with BRS.  Our coaches will continue to be there to guide and support you every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday. We will continue with our quarterly dinners, these are becoming a perfect opportunity for BRSers past and present to catch up on each others lives. Events: we will focus on only 1 event per month or skip a month if there are no events in line with our training/goals/focus.

We will continue our valued relationships with Mizuno, Ship Inn, RechargeHQ, and Shoes Feet Gear.

BRS Calendar:

I have started to populate the What's On page with upcoming events. I will continue to add to this and I will put a PDF version on the page also. Due to the nature of shift work and our experience is we have had to constantly change our social dates posted early in the year, so we will now post these on What's On and Facebook 6-8 weeks out from a social event.

We look forward to running 2016 with you!!
Renae, Matt L, Matt C, & Liss

BRS On Tour Wrap, Saturday Session & Mizuno Visit

BRS On Tour - Cadbury Marathon Festival Wrap

WOW, we have had time to reflect in the 9 days since BRS on Tour finished! What a fantastic tour it was!!

Our 5th Tour and a great success like the 4 before it!

NOW as with all BRS On Tour....what happens on Tour stays on Tour!!

So we won't give too much away, just a few pictures, and a wrap of race day.

Race day our Marathoners were off to an early start, hitting the bus transfer at 4:30am for a 30min ride out to the Cadbury Factory!  then we entered the VIP area, what a fantastic idea, I would highly recommend anyone doing the event in future years, sign up early for the VIP tent.

We had massages, stretching mats, portaloos, espresso coffee made fresh to order!, eggs, bacon, sausages, fruit buns, banana bread, bananas, lollies, and of course, as much chocolate as you could eat!!  this area was also right on the finish line for us to cheer all our runners in along the last straight.

Our marathoners all had an amazing race and a very psychological race at that!! for many it was their first marathon, and for some they were veterans, but in a marathon, every event feels like your first in terms of nerves! It was two laps of the half marathon course which makes it even the more tough to come pass go, then head back out for another 21!!

They finished with smiles on their faces and well earned medals around their necks!

Our half marathoners started their event at 6:30am, heading out on a very undulating course, finishing with a nice hill climb to the finish! Again, for a few it was their first half and their were proud smiles as they crossed the line. All put their dedication and hard training to work, and put in their best every step of the 21km!

Our 10km runners and Mel with Ellie our 5km runners headed out late, just as the sun was beginning to come out!!  It was really enjoyable being able to run past a few of our marathoners and cheer them on!

Overall, this was a well organised event, a fantastic atmosphere, and we had perfect running weather.

Thanks to all the BRSers who joined us on BRS On Tour - Cadbury Marathon, it was an absolute pleasure. You entertained us, inspired us, and motivated us.

We recovered with Tasmania's Long Lunch Safari Tour, wine, cheese, cider, and strawberry tour, what more could you want!!!

We can't wait to reveal plans for a 2016 mini on tour, and 2017 International On Tour!! Bring it on.

Saturday Session

EEKS, 32 degrees expected on Saturday, so we are definitely hitting Southbank for a run and swim!

When: Saturday  23rd December

Where: Steps of Southbank Surf Club

Parking: park under Southbank closest to the middle exit near Max Brenners
NOTE: $2 parking starts at 5am - 9am (10am if you bring your Parkrun token/barcard)

Time: 6-7:30am, why not do Parkrun at 7am !!

Cost: $2

Breaky and chats to follow!

Gold Coast 50km Wrap

This year the Kurrawa to Duranbah event was rebranded to the Gold Coast 50km. This was a key lead up event for us for the BRS On tour now only 3 weeks ago!

We had Will and Sean participated in the 50km relay running 25km each. We also had heaps of 15km runners using it as their half marathon lead up for Cadbury. Anita, Jill, Lisa, Jan, and Michelle Mac.

http://www.goldcoast50.com/race-info/

It is going to be hot; here are the details of the aid stations. I recommend carrying your own hydration also.

Aid stations: Competitors in the longer events are encouraged to carry their own supplies as the weather can be quite warm at this time of year, especially on the return leg. Full aid stations will be positioned at 5km intervals and will carry water, Endura sports drink, Coca Cola, chopped banana and glucose type lollies. Intermediate stations carrying water only will be positioned halfway between each of the 5 km aid stations. This race will be conducted during the onset of summer and it’s bound to be hot, especially on the return leg. Make sure you are properly hydrated the night before the race, take plenty of water during the race and don’t forget to take the Endura sports drink. It aids absorption of the water….water alone is not enough. If you are feeling dehydrated or dizzy, get under one of the many showers located along the beachfront. Ice will be available at all major aid stations. The last six aid stations will all carry ice.
