Its Heating UP!
In the heat of Summer 2009, we had 2 tough runs this week.
Monday saw us back at the botanical gardens for some fartlek efforts, well done to everybody for getting through it on such a hot, humid evening.
Wednesday we were back testing our improvements on the 3.3km river circuit. Most of you got through at least 2 at a good pace, which is great. The nine of you who made the 3 laps, top effort on a 10km evening!
Matt Cooper running some great times as always, 11.55 for the first lap! an improvement on the last time.
Darrell Giles took 2minutes of his last time and managed to come home stronger in the 3rd 3.3km than the first! Well done !!
Cindy and Michael both took 40seconds off their previous times, as did Matt Shephard. Great stuff!!
I will add the 3.3km times to the Time Trial page.
Fancy Something Different!!
Ever wanted to run 10km through a traffic tunnel? Dreamt about it?? Well now is your time to shine!
A once in a lifetime opportunity is set for early 2010 between 6:30am and 9am on a Sunday prior to the tunnel's official opening to traffic. The date will be announced just weeks before the event. The field is capped at 5,000 and you can register your interest now by clicking on http://www.workingwonders.com.au/clem7-home
The organisers will send a reminder email to sign up to run when the official dates are announced. The event will help raise funds to support the Royal Children's Hospital Foundation in working wonders for sick kids.
For those of you preparing to run the Hare and Hound on 10th January, beware that this may potentially overlap or be the following weekend. http://runtrails.org/articles/?page_id=276
Holidays
Those of you who have already started your holidays, Matt and I wish you a safe, fabulous, and healthy holiday. We look forward to seeing you when you return to training in 2010.

Weekly Wrap Up
A BIG Congratulations to Kylie Pickering who completed her first half marathon last weekend. Kylie was hoping for under 2hrs and smashed that coming in at 1hr48mins. FANTASTIC effort!
Oh and she then backed up for the Beep Test on Monday!
Monday
We did our very first Beep Test, which when announced generated some varied responses from groaning to excitment. For many of you it was your first Beep Test experience, and for others it bought back childhood memories (or nightmares!).
Everybody did extremely well, with several of the guys getting past 10 and it went down to the wire with Matt Shephard and Matt Lyne, with Matt Lyne finishing on 12.6. Well done to all. The results will be posted in the Time Trial section soon.
Party Wrap
Thanks to all of you who came along to our first BRS party at the Ship Inn after the gruelling Beep Test on Monday night. Great to see smiles on everybody's faces especially at the site of a well earned beer and dinner.
Congratulations to our award winners:
Claire Lynch - Took home a devine bottle of Spring Vale Pinot for her Most Improved due to her outstanding 2min35 PB at the Cool Night Classic.
Micheal Keetman - Took home a 12month subscription to Runner's World Magazine for his Most Consistent BRSer award. This was a close race with Kylie, Darryl and Claire coming close runner ups for the most sessions attended. Well done to all.
Happy Running

Weekend Wrap Up and other!
Bryon Bay definitely put on the weather for our first BRS group event. Minimal wind, 20 degrees, with the sun shining.
Twelve BRS Runner headed to NSW to run the Bryon Bay Lighthouse 10km Run. The first 10km run for many since the Bridge to Brisbane (B2B) - this event definitely stepped it up a gear. Up and down the hill to the lighthouse and a 2km run on the beach. All runners should be extremely happy with their results, with some great times being recorded.
Claire and Sam improved there times by several minutes from their B2B time and Shelley, Matt, Michael K, Kylie, Michael, Luke, Steve, and Alexandra all clocked in under an hour. After an early early 3:30am drive from Brisbane, Col had a great race and finished strong! Another 10km race down. WELL DONE BRS!
Cool Night Classic:
Thanks to those that have already registered under the BRS Team. If you haven't joined, please feel free to join the team (team name: brisbane run squad - password: brs). The 1st early bird finished last Friday, so it is now $25 until 06th November, then it goes up to $35. FYI: If you enter under BRS, it won't allow you to pay. I simply go in and accept your entries in bulk, pay the race fees and then you can fix me up at the next session.

Races & Weekly update
*****Daylight savings has started. The race is due to start at 7am - remember this is 6am QLD time - when you arrive on Saturday, don't forget to turn your watches back 1 hr. ******
Info for Race Prep
The temp forecast for Sunday is 20-28 degrees. Between now and Saturday evening, ensure you keep yourselves well hydrated. I would suggest doing another run before Sunday. A 30-40min run on Friday with 5 x 30sec efforts with 1min rest in between. Stretch well on Saturday.
Info for Race Day
On the morning of the run please arrive at Denning Park, Bay Street on the Lighthouse Side of the Surf Club, Byron Bay, between 6 and 6.30. There is ample parking. You need to give yourself time to collect your tag and bib before the start of the run/walk. There will be a registrants table where you will be given your bib which you will put onto yourself with safety pins which will be provided. You will also get a timing tag which you will put onto your shoes. At 6.45 runners will gather at the start line where there will be a very short welcome prior to the run commencing. Walkers are to waitaway from the start line. Runners will commence first at 7am, followed by walkers at about 7.10.

Cool Night Classic - Team Registration
http://www.pwc.com.au/events/coolnightclassic-brisbane/
I have registered a team. Here are the details if you would like to run as a BRS member.
Team Name: Brisbane Run Squad
Team Password: brs
Please choose your events wisely.
We are doing the Bryon Lighthouse 10km Run as a 'club' event on 25th October, 2009.
We would like to make this 5.2km run another club event, as it is central, a shorter distance, and well organised.
There are 2 more events on the weekend after the Cool Night Classic, the Skirt Chaser on Saturday 14th November and Mousdash on Sunday 15th November. Of course you are welcome to do either of these, however BRS training will not be tailored for these events, especially the Mousdash Cootha run. I am happy to help you out with advice if you are planning to do Moustash.
Happy Training

5km Skirt Chaser
Saturday 14th November, 2009
5pm Run Start
Botanical Gardens

This looks like an interesting race and the first time done in Australia. Females start first, following by males 3minutes later, then an afterparty.
Remember these 2 events are only 2 days apart, so choose wisely.
I would treat the PWC run as a competitive event to test out your running fitness, and the skirt chaser as just a little bit of fun and something different!
Thanks to Matt Shepherd for letting us know about these events.
See you soon, Happy Running

1st BRS Time Trial
It looks like we have over 10 members keen to join us at Byron Bay for the lighthouse run - only 17 days to go. Don't forget to put your entry in.
Some of you have been asking what you should do on your 3rd run for the week - due to the intensity of our sessions on Monday and Wednesday nights, I would recommend a slow aerobic run on the Friday or the weekend of 40-50mins and plenty of stretching.
Happy running!

Weekly & Lighthouse Run Update
Happy to update that this week at BRS has been GREAT. Monday saw big numbers, with lots of new faces and lots of hills conquered! Wednesday was a tough run, we covered over 7km with a mixture of hills, sprints, and aerobic running. Lots of smiles at the end with individual achievements during the session! Well earned lollies and drinks to follow! We look forward to seeing new faces coming back for more!
Member Goals:
Darrell Giles a dedicated member of BRS is currently training for the Auckland Marathon - with only 30 days to go! The last few weeks he has pounded the pavements totally 100km of running per week! Keep up the great work Darrell!
Best of luck to BRS member Matt Cooper for his first 1/2 ironman this Sunday at the Gold Coast.

Our Next Goal
There are a few races coming up in the next few months, such as the 5km run at the Palm Beach Festival (11th October), Byron Lighthouse Run 10km (25th October), and the Mousdash 10.5km Cootha Run (15th Nov - perfect for those guys looking for an excuse to grow a mo!). See BRS home for more info.
You need to have personal goals, but as a club, the next race BRS will be aiming and training for is the Bryron Lighthouse Run (10km run, 8km walk). This means we will tailor training over the next 5 weeks to achieving that goal. Matt and I will be attending and participating in the event, and we would love to see many of you there participating also. Early bird entry of $30 applies until the 25th of September. The race starts at 7am, as Bryon is a 2-2.5hr drive, I would recommend getting accommodation for the night of the 24th. www.byronrun.com

Update
As from next Monday 21st September, we will be back to regular sessions, every Monday and Wednesday evenings, 6pm-7pm from the Ship Inn, Southbank. Matt and I look forward to seeing you there!
Thanks heaps for your words of support before the World Triathlon Championships, which were held on the Gold Coast last Saturday, 12th Sept. It was such an honour to wear the green and gold. The atmosphere was amazing, competition tough, cheering overwelming, and overall the whole experience was one to remember. Some of you asked for an update on how I went - I had a great race, doing a personal best in the ride and run, and coming 24th overall.
Now the event is over, I look forward to sinking my teeth into BRS and working with you to achieve some great running results and reaching your fitness goals!

Our first Run
Our first run with Brisbane Run Squad was on Thursday night 3rd of September. I admit I was a little nervous to find out just how many people would show up, but that was quickly alleviated when person after person kept walking around the corner heading straight for us. Numbers were pretty good, until, we found out that quite a few people were around the other side of The Ship Inn waiting there. After we rounded them up out total numbers were 30!!!
It is very exciting to get such a great response, thanks to everyone who turned up. We can really only go up from here. So, if you didn't make it on Thursday we hope to see you tonight (Monday) for some interval training. Don't be scared it won't hurt--MUCH!
Oh, and don't forget to tell your friends.
Remember: pain is just weakness leaving the body!
Matt
